This is the highest number in a single day since February 24, when 983 infections were confirmed, signaling an unwelcome upward tendency.
The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 117,099.
Of 18,698 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 5.2% were positive, up on the 3.0% rate the day before. 4% is regarded as the threshold at which the virus is spreading in an uncontrolled manner.
The 14-day cumulative infection rate per 100,000 inhabitants rose sharply from 407.7 Tuesday to 419.9 Wednesday. Anything over 200 is classed as a "very high risk" pandemic situation under the government's four-stage "traffic light" system.

Eight more deaths were confirmed April 26, taking the total death toll since the start of the pandemic to 2,118.
According to the National Health Service (NVD), on April 27 a total of 3,831 people received a first Covid-19 vaccine and 1,942 received a second dose.
Meanwhile in Estonia 396 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed April 28 and Lithuania is currently hardest hit with 1,585 cases.

All arrivals to the country (including returnees) need to fill in an electronic declaration prior to coming to Latvia. It is available at the website covidpass.lv and arrivals need to show a negative Covid-19 test from a maximum 72 hours before arrival.
