Omicron confirmed at nursing home

All 16 elderly residents of the Spriditis nursing home in Salacgriva have contracted the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the institution's acting head Ilze Elste informed the LETA newswire.

She said that 14 of the nursing home's clients were fully vaccinated against Covid-19, while two had categorically refused to take the jab.

Elste said that during the Christmas holidays one of the clients had left the nursing home without permission to celebrate elsewhere. That client was one of the first to test positive for Covid-19. At the end of the year, a care provider at Spriditis was also diagnosed with Covid-19.

"Luckily, all the clients are having light or no symptoms at all," Elste said, adding that the infected employee is asymptomatic and has been allowed to self-isolate at the nursing home to protect family members from getting the infection.

The acting head of the nursing home said that the clients had attended a New Year's Eve concert at a local clubhouse in Pociems. The residents of Spridits and two other nursing homes visited the venue with a 30-minute interval. They sat at tables in groups of four and kept a two-meter distance. Elste noted that residents of the nursing home have grown very tired of the secluded and monotonous life during the pandemic.
