Police and firefighters' vaccination numbers low in Latvia

The rate of interior services employees' vaccination is low, Marija Golubeva, Interior Minister, said in an interview on Latvian Television July 8.

45% of employees are vaccinated against Covid-19 in the State Police, whereas under 30% of staff are vaccinated within the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD). Golubeva said that the Ministry had pointed this out a week ago and the police had begun to act rapidly, while the VUGD, unfortunately, still has a small vaccination proportion.

“I very much hope that the increasing trend will continue. (..) As for other services, they are numerically smaller, but there is a much better situation. We have some services where there are 70% [vaccinated people], 80%. It is not that the whole internal affairs system does not vaccinate,” the Minister said.

She said that the Ministry of Interior is working with the heads of the relevant services to encourage employees to get vaccinated. “I think we must now focus more on explaining to people that, first of all, they work with residents and they provide a service without which residents cannot live. Consequently, they must, of course, be vaccinated so they can continue to provide that service.”
