Take note – story published 2 years and 5 months ago

On the first day of 2022, Latvia recorded 167 new Covid-19 cases, according to the latest figures from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). The small figure is explained by the low number of tests carried out on New Year's Eve.

Of that total, 88 were unvaccinated persons, or persons not fully vaccinated, and 79 were fully vaccinated. The total number of cases detected since the start of the pandemic now stands at 276,841.

Of just 1,674 tests carried out in the past 24 hours, 10% were positive. The 14-day cumulative morbidity rate per 100,000 population dropped from 574 Friday to 534.8 Saturday.

Sadly, seven more Covid-related deaths were also confirmed. All of the fatalities were aged 60 years or over and three of them were fully vaccinated. The total death toll since the start of the pandemic now stands at 4,577.

Saturday data from the National Health Service show 446 patients being treated in hospital with 71 displaying serious symptoms.

In the other Baltic states, Estonia reported 717 cases and no deaths while in Lithuania there were nearly 2,000 cases and 12 deaths.
