242 reports of uncleaned roofs in Rīga last week

Snow has fallen abundantly in Latvia over the past week, so pedestrians should be particularly wary of icicles and snow falling from the roof. Residents reported uncleaned roofs and dangerous icicles to municipal police 242 times in Riga last week, Latvian Television reported on December 4.

Building managers are responsible for cleaning roofs, and Riga City Council (RD) says no specific date has been set for clearing snow and icicles, however, this should be done to prevent any incidents and also to protect roof structures.

Municipal police are also responding to reports from residents. In 50 cases it has been confirmed that the roof needs to be cleaned, while in another 50 cases the police detected dangerous icicles.

Fences are allowed to be installed temporarily while cleaning of the roof takes place.

A fine of up to 350 euros for natural persons and up to 1400 euros for legal persons may also be received for an uncleaned roof.
