Two dead after falling through the ice in Latvia

Two people lost their lives on Monday, December 18, after falling through the ice on bodies of water during a widespread thaw. State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) officers have also helped forest animals who had fallen through thin ice, VUGD reported Tuesday, December 19.

Around 17:00 rescuers rushed to Jelgava municipality's Cenu parish where a man had fallen through the ice 30 meters from the shore of a pond while ice fishing, and died.

On Monday before seven in the evening, rescuers received another call to Lendžu parish of Rēzekne municipality, where a man had fallen through the ice about 300 meters from the shore. Using a lifeboard, the man was taken to the shore of the lake and handed over to Emergency Medical Service personnel who confirmed his death.

In the afternoon, rescuers received a call to Madona municipality Kalsnava parish, where two deer had fallen into the Aiviekste River. Using a lifeboard, the deer were dragged out of the water and made their way back towards the forest.

The VUGD reminds public that ice on bodies of water is very uneven at the moment. As the air temperature rises, the ice will become thinner and even more dangerous.

Overall, the VUGD received 47 calls in the past 24 hours - nine for fire fighting, 33 for rescue work, while five were false alarms.
