Nearly ten tonnes of knits sent to Ukraine in latest campaign

Latvian residents have handed over 9,600 kilograms of various knitwear to the Latvian postal service departments between February 6 and March 17 in the third knitting donation drive, Latvian Post (LP) said on Monday, March 20.

This weight equals about 96,000 pairs of knitted socks, according to the organizer “Mēs Iecavai”. The donated knits are further delivered to Ukrainian soldiers, civilians, and war refugees by the Society Your Friends (Tavi draugi).

During the campaign, Latvians were invited to donate all kinds and sizes of socks, gloves, scarves, and hats for adults.

"It's not easy to sympathize with someone else's grief and trouble. It is simple to say how sorry you are, but another thing is to show your compassion in action.

"We see these good works every day in the association Your Friends and we know that the people of Latvia are really prepared to support the people of Ukraine. We can only admire the Latvian knitting family for the enormous patience, diligence and love with which these shipments come. We really hope it will warm and inspire the hearts of the people of Ukraine!" said Beāte Bēvalde, spokeswoman for Your Friends.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there have been three knitting campaigns in support of Ukraine. The first of these began in March 2022.
