Take note – story published 8 years ago

In the last 24 hours 45 people have been injured falling on ice, 30 of them in Rīga. At the same time, more than 500 people in January have been penalized over not cleaning the ice from sidewalks or rooftops, reported LSM's Latvian-language service Wednesday via BNS.

The injuries suffered most often were broken arms and legs. Most of the victims were women.

People can be penalized for not removing ice and snow from the rooftops of or the sidewalk by the places they own, with fines reaching €350 for individuals and €1400 for companies.

Here's a photo shoot by LETA newswire photographer Edijs Pālens documenting what it was like Tuesday at one particularly slippery spot on Krišjāņa Barona street.
