Collection of special knitted socks and sleeves is organized by the public organization “Mēs – Iecavai” in cooperation with the Latvian Postal service and the association “Tavi draugi”.
“The top of the sock is open, then it's wrapped around like a puttee, and then buttons are closed. Consequently, it does not have to be pulled on, and if there is, for example, a plaster, it cannot be put on properly, because the sock has a curvature. Consequently, an open sock is badly needed. The socks must be longer. They must go at least to the knee. Also a separate sleeve, and we knit them a little longer, to cover the fingers of the hand. Well, they must also be wider than usual,” said Lauma Neimane, spokeswoman for the public organization “Mēs– Iecavai”.
The knitted socks and sleeves should be taken to the nearest post office and it should be indicated that the consignment is 'adījumi' (knitwear). Latvian Postal service will accept the consignment and send it free of charge to the association “Tavi draugi”, who will further deliver the socks and sleeves to Ukraine.
Neimane asked that the items be sent as soon as they are ready, even if it means sending one at a time.
This is not the first knitting campaign in Latvia with the purpose to keep Ukraine's defenders warm: one was already launched in the spring and another has been launched in autumn.
