On September 1 children start the 2016/2017 school year, on the date known as Knowledge Day in Latvia. On this day, pupils and teachers are welcomed to school standing in a celebratory line and flock to classrooms for the first lesson of the new academic year, reported Latvian Radio Thursday.

Latvia's President: Knowledge is power

Latvia's President Raimonds Vējonis congratulated Latvia's pupils on the beginning of the new school year, reported LETA.

"In the new school year I wish you to learn new skills, to find new friends and to see how beautiful, diverse and interesting is the world around us. Learn to think, debate and cooperate.

Knowledge is power that no one can take away from us. This power will shape our future. Grow up smart for Latvia’s sake,” Vejonis said in his congratulatory message to school children.

Teachers' wages up

On September 1 the new teachers' wage model becomes effective, with the minimum teachers wage raised from €420 to €680 a month.

The new minimum rate is being introduced gradually on different levels of education.
