DJ on the run in seven charity marathon marathons

Take note – story published 1 year and 10 months ago

Latvian disc jockey (DJ) Toms Grēviņš is to run a series of personal marathons to raise funds for this year's "High Five!" (Dod Pieci!) public media charity donation drive.

As previously reported by LSM, the charity effort is already open for donations to support Ukrainian children in Latvia. The fundamental idea is that people donate at least 5 euros to get a song played on the radio, however, several other fundraising ideas have also been spun off from that simple notion.

One of them comes from DJ Toms Grēviņš, who will repeat what he did last year and run a distance equivalent to a marathon (42 km) each day throughout the ‘High Five!’ campaign.

"The aim of my marathons last year was to get out of my comfort zone and attract public attention through
that. This year I want to continue this tradition and run seven marathons. It is not an easy task, but it is my
contribution to support Ukrainian refugees. Appetite comes with eating! This year I have the opportunity to
raise even more donations and I have no doubt in my mind that I will do it!" said Grēviņš of his looming exertions.

On the opening day of ‘High Five!’, 16 December, at 10:00, Grēviņš will start his first marathon run in Riga from the special Glass Studio in Dome Square. For this run, a donation will be made by the housing development company ‘Bonava Latvija’ to support the children of Ukrainian refugee families.

On 17 December, Toms will head to Rēzekne to run another 42 km which will see the ‘Latvijas Finieris’ company dipping into their pockets as a result. On 18 December, Toms will run his 42 kilometres in Daugavpils, with the support of ‘Circle K’. On 19 December, Grēviņš will return to Riga, starting and finishing from the ‘Printful’ headquarters. The company has also promised to add an additional EUR 5 to their donation for each kilometer run by its employees on that day.

‘Kronus’, a manufacturer of pallets, will donate funds for Toms' marathon on 20 December circling around Lake Talsi. On 21 December, thanks to a donation from ‘M79.lv’, Grēviņš will run his marathon in Jelgava. The company will also donate an additional 5% of its income from the sale of certain goods from today, 7 December, until 22 December.

On the final day of ‘High Five!’, 22 December, as long as his knees are still in working order, Toms will again run 42 kilometres in Riga, this time with backing from supermarket chain ‘Rimi’.

Each of these companies has pledged to make a donation of at least 10,000 euros to support Ukrainian refugee children in Latvia, which will be added to the total donation cheque of the charity marathon ‘High Five!’ at the end of the marathon, on 22 December, live on Latvian public media from 21:10 to 22:20.

How to donate

From December 1 to 22, donations can be made on the website www.dodpieci.lv.

From December 1 to 31, donations can also be made at all Circle K petrol stations, where both cash and non-cash donations will be accepted. This year, Circle K has promised to double the donations received at their petrol stations.

From December 16 to 22, cash and non-cash donations can also be made at the charity marathon glass studio in Rīga's Old Town (Dome Square, by the cathedral).

Until January 6 2023, donations can be made by selecting the project ‘High Five!’ on the website of the charity organisation Ziedot.lv.

All money donated by companies will go 100% to the Emergency Relief Fund established by Ziedot.lv.

There are currently more than 35,000 Ukrainian refugees in Latvia. According to estimates by the Ministry of the Interior, around 31% of all Ukrainian refugees in Latvia are children.

‘High Five!’ is organised by Latvian Radio, Latvian Television and Latvian Public Media (LSM).
