Fewer fare dodgers in September

The number of fare dodgers in September has decreased by 24.3%, according to Rigas Satiksme spokesman Viktors Zakis who told BNS that 1,822 ticketless passengers were caught in buses, 1,477 in trolleybuses and 1,288 in trams. 

Of these fare dodgers, 905 paid their fines right away and 3,682 were issued fine receipts.

Rigas Satiksme ticket inspectors conducted 20,451 inspections in September this year, which was by 10.3% or 2,352 inspections less compared to August.

The highest number of inspections was conducted in buses (9,676), followed by trolleybuses (6,543) and trams (4,232).

In August 2015, Rigas Satiksme ticket inspectors carried out 22,803 inspections and caught 6,056 passengers without a ticket.

The fine for using public transportation without a ticket is €20 if paid on the spot or €30 with a fine receipt.

Rigas Satiksme, which is fully owned by the Riga City Council, provides bus, tram and trolleybus services to passengers in Riga.
