Take note – story published 7 years ago

The first six asylum seekers – a family from Syria, which includes four children of pre-school age – were relocated from Turkey to Latvia on Thursday night, the LETA news agency was told at the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.

These are the first asylum seekers to be brought to Latvia from Turkey under the EU-wide relocation scheme.

The family has been placed in the asylum center in Mucenieki, outside Riga.

One of the relocated persons has worked in the construction industry in Syria, but no further details are available of the remainder of the intake.

So far, Latvia has admitted 29 people under the EU-wide relocation program, but has in principle agree to take in more than 500 refugees..
