State Police representative Ansis Pumpurs told Latvian Radio that it was a sideways crash, and that the car drove with headlights on as it partook in the military exercise and so had to get to the exercise camp from Rīga quickly.
The Namejs exercise -- the greatest since Latvia regained its independence -- is held from August 20 to September 2. It has more than 10,000 participants, including Latvian and allied troops and home guards, reserve officers, volunteers, employees of the Defense Ministry, police and border guards.
