Illegal sushi ring busted

Tales of underground vodka and cigarette factories are fairly commonplace in Latvia but law enforcement have scored a first in shutting down an illegal sushi factory.

According to an announcement by the Food and Veterinary Service (PVD), an illegal factory turning out the trendy Japanese fish dishes was detected in the Plavnieki suburb of Riga, operating under the name Arena Sushi and even provided a door-to-door delivery service.

The PVD called in the police and together they busted the healthy-eating criminals who were turning out their California rolls and Sashimi without proper food licensing and hygiene certificates.

The PVD urged the public to make sure food retailers had proper registration and said sushi was classed as a "high risk food" because it uses raw fish.

Legal proceedings have been launched against the renegade sushi makers who face a fine of up to 700 euros and the confiscation of their food - so let's hope the case is dealt with quickly before all that raw fish starts to smell bad.
