Interview with Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson, Icelandic diplomat

Take note – story published 8 years ago

Iceland was the first country to recognize the restoration of Latvia's independence in 1991. Jón Baldvin Hannibalsson, Iceland's Foreign Minister at the time of the audacious move, talked to Latvian Television's "One on One" about the turbulent times in an interview aired Tuesday.

The interview relates how ties between dissidents in the USSR and diplomats in the west lead to Iceland breaking the international silence in recognizing the restoration of the Baltic independence. It also touches upon subjects like Russia's role today, the refugee crisis, Ukraine, and more.

The help of Danish and Icelandic diplomats in restoring the Baltic independence was dramatized in the "Those who Dare" movie released last year.
