The Mikrotikls IT company has donated €1m to the University of Latvia for fulfilling natural sciences and medicine projects, the Latvian University Fund told the press Tuesday.

The donation came as the company was pleased with previous cooperation with the university's donation fund - in late 2015 Mikrotikls donated €424,000, used by the university to support 12 projects in IT, medicine and natural sciences.

"The donation gives a sense of great responsibility and provides an impetus and energy to seek broader horizons, so that we can one day be proud with Nobel Prize-worthy scientists and their discoveries," said Laila Kundziņa-Zvejniece, the executive of the fund.

Altogether Mikrotikls has donated €1.5m to the University of Latvia, making it one of the largest donors ever.

Mikrotikls is a Latvian IT company known for its wireless routers. Most of its production is exported.

Previously Mikrotikls donated €1m to a children's hospital.
