Latvians think that Christmas, Midsummer (Līgo) and Independence Day are the most important celebrations of the year, while for other nationalities in Latvia New Year's, Women's Day and Easter are more popular, according to a Latvian barometer survey by DNB published Saturday.

About 73% of Latvians said Christmas is an important celebration, while 52% of other nationalities said the same. For New Year's eve the figure was 58% and 84% respectively, and for Midsummer the figures sat at 57% and 31%. The figure for Easter was 39% and 49%.

As expected, for 'Soviet-tasting' days such as Women's day and May 9 the figures were much more skewed towards popularity among minorities, and vice versa for celebrations tied to the Latvian state, like Independence Day.
