Latvian Television (LTV) has cancelled an agreement with the Ventspils City Council in the show Dziesmu sirdij rodi Ventspilī (Find Your Heart's Song in Ventspils), the television announced July 5.

This follows content editor Gunta Sloga calling for the television to cut ties with the council after viewers tweeted a still from the show with smiling Ventspils' mayor Aivars Lembergs, a prominent subject in the 'oligarch transcripts' released by Ir magazine that have exposed breathtaking levels of cynicism and self-interest among people who often like to portray themselves working for the good of the country.

Sloga said on Facebook that "Saturday's LTV broadcast is a shame not only to Latvian Television but the media environment as a whole."

"I have turned to the LTV board to cancel cooperation with the Ventspils City Council. Before that happens, I don't see myself, as an LTV content editor, to oversee the Latvijas sirdsdziesma project."

LTV told the press that it will review principles over cooperating with Latvian municipalities in broadcast projects. The television will look for other sources of funding, tweeted LTV head Ivars Belte.

Just like Latvian Radio and the LSM news portals in English, Latvian and Russian, LTV is funded by the Latvian public.
