Ministry lets reforms slack for another school year

Vocational public schools can wait on the implementation of school salary reforms until January 2016, the Education ministry announced in a release Wednesday, while local government and private schools of general and vocational nature have until September of next year to finish planning and putting proposed fixes to teachers’ pay schemes into effect.

The announcement came amidst Saeima’s preoccupation with presidential elections and put the spin of an extension of preparation time on what is in fact the further delay of reforms the disillusioned education sector was finally counting on seeing come true after many years of thwarted hopes.

In May Education Minister Mārīte Seile announced that the new model for calculating teachers’ pay structures would not be ready for implementation by the originally planned launch of the new salary system by the start of the next school year on September 1, 2015.
