Morality guidelines work group discusses nine virtues

The work group tasked with working out 'morality guidelines' corresponding to the controversial education law amendments has been offered nine mores or virtues for inclusion in the guidelines, but discussions are still ongoing, reported LSM's Latvian-language service Tuesday.

The work group, created by the National Centre for Education (VISC), has discussed respect, solidarity, justice, virtue, fairness, freedom, responsibility, studiousness, caring, and empathy, VISC spokeswoman Diāna Āboltiņa told Neatkariga Rita Avize daily.

However, VISC are still working at the content of morality guidelines, and a new version is in the works, containing more precise basic values of society. Probably traditional values such as fairness and respect will remain on the list.

Before, there were discussions and then lectures held on what can be included in the morality guidelines. The next meeting of the group is slated for December 22.

On June 18 the parliament supported amendments to education law that obliges schools to give children 'moral education' in line with the values of the Constitution.

As what exactly constitutes 'a moral education' was not specified in the amendments, VISC has set out to create guidelines on moral upbringing.
