Municipalities could take in more refugees, says Interior Minister

The municipalities in the vicinity of Rīga should 'check their attitude' towards the accommodation of war refugees, said the Interior Minister Marija Golubeva in an interview on Latvian Television March 15.

According to her, the activity of Latvian municipalities in accommodating refugees from Ukraine is very different. “There is quite a lot of investment in the process in Rīga,” the minister said, adding that the state responsible authorities are also working intensively on the reception of Ukrainian refugees.

Around 700 people have turned to the civil protection commission for accommodation in Rīga. In Liepāja and southern Kuzeme, there were 276 refugees, 310 in Ventspils, but fewer elsewhere.

“But I'm grateful to every municipality that, for example, opens a center for refugees, as in Cēsis. And I think it would be time for other municipalities, such as Pierīga, which send people to Rīga and say they don't have such opportunities, to review their position very seriously,” the Minister said.
