Navy patrols monitor Russian sub-support ship

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Latvia's National Armed Forces (NBS) tweeted Friday that Naval Coast Guard patrol ships spotted another Russian armed forces submarine support vessel in the Baltic Sea.

The ship was a Russian Navy Kashtan-class submarine support ship and it was seen near Latvia's maritime border, 18.1 nautical miles from its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) jurisdiction.

As reported, this week brought an unprecedented intensification of Russian military activities, especially in the skies above the Baltic Sea. Multiple-plane squadrons were intercepted and followed by NATO allied jets also over the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, as well as the Black Sea, prompting much media attention to the provocative moves in European airspace, which have been cited as a potential threat to commercial aviation.
