Three weeks remain until the Riga City Council elections. What are the residents expecting most from the next Riga government? Sociologists searched for the answer in a survey conducted by research centre SKDS together with the portal LSM.lv and Latvian Television, LTV reported August 8.

Latvian citizens in Riga were asked “What do you think is the biggest problem in Riga, which should be addressed primarily by the new City Council?”

Most – 45.8% have put Riga improvement in the first place.

At the top of the list of related problems is the repair of streets and roads (30.7%).

Most parties have promised to act on it in their programs.

The least concern is about children's areas, where, as a matter of urgency, only 0.3% of those surveyed are expecting action. Similarly, sewers (0.5%), street cleanliness (0.6%) and slums (0.9%) are not among the most problematic areas. The situation with green zones, parks (1.7%) as well as waterways (3%) and waste management (3.1%) has attracted a little more attention.

Looking at all the problems in the capital, which were first identified by the population, it appears that the least issues are related to sports in Riga. They are recognized as urgent only by 0.4%.

Nor are Rigans particularly concerned about urban developments in general (0.7%), public safety and order (0.7%), culture (1.1%), ecology (1.1%), utilities (1.3%), and national and ethnic issues (1.4%).

A little more than 2.7% have recognized the fight with COVID-19 and its consequences as a first step.

Healthcare was identified by 3.3%, economy – 8.3%, social issues – 10.1%, kindergarten and education – 11.2%, residential fund – 12.3%, traffic – 17.3%, governmental work issues, including corruption – 21%.

Consequently, most - 45.8% - expect the new City Council to start with the city's improvement.

9.3% said it was hard to say which issue is the primary. But 2.5% have mentioned something else other than the mentioned options.

The SKDS survey was conducted from 24 to 28 July, addressing 1008 people.
