The Riga Marathon, which will take place on May 17 next year is particularly popular with overseas runners.
The 2015 race will be the 25th Riga Marathon and organizers are planning some surprises to mark the occasion.
Race director Aigars Nords said: "The 25th anniversary of the marathon is a good moment to set new challenges for further development of the race. We are looking forward for raising quality standards even higher... by continuing our integration among the leading marathons of Europe, introducing new technology solutions for the convenience of the participants and reinforcing international recognition of Riga and Latvia.
"For example, in 2015, when Latvia will be the presiding country of the Council of the European Union, the Lattelecom Riga Marathon will be included in the official event schedule of Latvia’s presidency, which will allow the running enthusiasts of Latvia and other countries to properly celebrate the 25th anniversary."
Riga's Marathon is regarded as the leader in the region. 23 thousand people from 60 countries participated in the 2014 event, setting a new record for foreign participants.
