Rīga City Council on December 17 declined the application by the activist organization Tautas varas fronte (People's Power Front) to organize a demonstration beside the Freedom Monument on Sunday, Latvian Television reported.

Representatives of the City Council indicated that the organizers were "not prepared to ensure that only 25 people would participate in the event."

The local government received two applications for demonstrations from the People's Power Front, one on December 16 and one on December 20. Later the event on Wednesday was canceled while on December 20 the People's Power Front had requested a three-hour event by the Freedom Monument to inform the public “of the fascism of the state and the dictatorship of Covid.”

Following the excessive protest with several hundred people on December 12, the government has been contemplating banning pickets and demonstrations altogether during the state of emergency.
