Russian missile boat creeps up close during partnership talks

Take note – story published 8 years ago

As the Eastern Partnership Summit assembled the EU’s top leaders together with six aspiring European-hopeful states for its second day Friday morning in Riga, National Armed Forces detected a Russian navy small missile vessel Passat 750 six nautical miles (11.1 km) outside Latvia’s maritime border.

This is the second spotting of a military unit on the Baltic sea surface, as Wednesday there was also a sighting of two ships inside Latvia’s Exclusive Economic Zone but quite close to its official territorial jurisdiction in those waters. On that occasion it was a Kilo-class sub and survey ship snooping around 10 nautical miles (18.5 km) from the state line.

The tally for the year so far in sightings of Russian ships near the water border now stands at 49.
