Latvia is still among the worst countries in the EU to be a LGBTI+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and others) citizen, according to an index by the rights organization ILGA published May 17.

The Rainbow Europe 2022 index looked at how European laws and policies affect lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and other sexuality people and gender identities, and ranked the 49 European nations accordingly.

Of all 49 European countries Latvia scored the 36th, stepping up five positions for the first time in six years.

Among EU member states, Latvia ranked the fourth from the bottom at 22% in terms of legal equality, ahead only of Poland, Bulgaria, and Romania. Last year, Latvia came second-lowest with 17% after Poland. Lithuania scored 24% (23% last year) and Estonia 36% (38% last year).

The report for Latvia commended the July 2021 decision of the Saeima on amendments to the Criminal Law, recognizing that hate crimes committed on grounds of “social hatred” amount to aggravating circumstances. The report also mentioned the failure to establish legal civil partnerships in the country.
