On August 9 the director Uģis Brikmanis passed away, his colleagues confirmed to LTV. Born in 1956, he is chiefly known for his work at the Latvian Song and Dance Festival.

He will be remembered by festival participants, seeing as he had directed several of the festivals, including this year's spectacular XXVI Latvian Song and XVI Dance Celebration, which on the country's centenary came to a spectacular and emotional close.

"Uģis Brikmanis is the Gaiziņš [hill] in the flatland of Latvian culture," said his colleague, conductor Ivars Cinkuss.

While choreographer Agris Daņiļēvičs said, "It's impossible to compare his output to any other. He has an outlook of a cosmic scale."

Brikmanis was also director of Rīga's events when it became a European capital of culture in 2014, as well as artistic director of the 800th anniversary of the Latvian capital.

He has also staged productions in Latvian and Lithuanian theaters, as well as lead the Latvian Radio Theater.
