Take note – story published 5 years ago

Around 1,000 teachers are protesting outside the Latvian parliament March 20 over what they feel is unfair treatment regarding their pay.

Talks designed to head off the picket failed March 19 and teachers are making good on their threat to take to the streets in fairly large numbers, Latvian Television reported.

The previous government approved a  timetable for  gradual wage increases for teachers last summer, subject to certain factors educational reforms being enacted.

According to the schedule, the lowest monthly wage rate for teachers should increase from the current € 710 to € 750 from 1 September this year, but the new government has concluded that as reforms have not happened, the other pay rises are on hold, to the anger of the teaching union.

Talks between the parties are set to continue later on Wednesday.
