Thirteen dead this year as flu season gathers force

Thirteen people have died from influenza this year, and five of them died in the last week of January, according to data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, reported by LSM's Latvian-language service Wednesday.

All of the patients who died had been weakened by chronic disease.

Seven more have fallen ill with influenza pneumonia. 

Data show that from January 25 to January 31 a total of 163 patients were hospitalized in the largest cities in Rīga.

The largest number of influenza patients at >200 per 100,000 people are in Rīga, Jelgava and Jūrmala.
