The United Kingdom said Thursday it would deploy 1,000 rapid reaction troops to the Baltic states as part of NATO efforts to bolster the region's defense capability, independent TV channel ITV News reported.

The UK will lead a new 'Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF)' when it is inaugurated in 2017 and will then participate on a rotational basis with other NATO allies, British Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon was reported as saying.

The UK will also send four of its advanced Eurofighter RAF Typhoon jets to participate in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission this year.

"NATO’s credibility in the face of the security challenges we face depends on everyone playing their part," Fallon said.
