Meteorological winter begins in Latvia

On Friday, November 17, meteorological winter began provisionally in Latvia, and in the following days the weather will be dry, hoarfrost is expected, according to forecasts.

In Alūksne, meteorological winter started back on October 25, in part of the country – on November 16, but throughout the country, November 17 is the first day with average air temperature below zero, according to operational data from the Latvian Center for Environment, Geology, and Meteorology.

The meteorological winter begins when the average daily air temperature is below zero for five consecutive days, and its start is the first of those days.

Last year, the meteorological winter also started on November 17, which is earlier than the norm.

On Friday, as well as in the coming days, the weather will be mostly dry, the sky will occasionally clear, it will snow slightly in places, more along the coast.  Slow to moderate easterly winds will blow and the mid-day air temperature will be +2 C to -3 C.

No significant precipitation is expected in Rīga on Friday, slow to moderate eastern winds will blow,  and air temperatures will hover around zero.
