Overcast skies will clear at times, especially so in the eastern province of Latgale. Riga and the rest of the land will also see some clearing of the clouds in the afternoon.
No significant precipitation is forecast, while slow southeastern winds are expected to prevail.
Highs will reach only -4 degrees in Latgale while coastal Kurzeme air temperatures might climb to +2 degrees.
While driving conditions were reported to be satisfactory on the nation’s road system, the development of black ice on frozen stretches of highways and streets remains a hazard of which drivers should beware.
The freeze is forecast to dip further for the weekend, with lows falling below the -10 degree mark as a broad anti-cyclone system settles over Latvia, sending dry, cold air into the Baltic region.
Skies will continue to clear up overnight to Friday, remaining so until Tuesday, when a low-pressure system should arrive from the Atlantic, bringing higher temperatures and more moisture.
Until then, high temperatures in Kurzeme may stay near the zero mark, but the rest of the country is expected to remain deeply chilled, with overnight lows falling between -8 and -13 degrees, highs staying between -3 and -8 degrees.
