According to a Latvian State Roads (LVC) update at 16.30 due to the freezing rain especially difficult driving conditions are in central Vidzeme region:
- on the Vidzeme highway (A2) section from Vangaži to the turn to Smiltene;
- on the section of the Valmiera highway (A3) from Vangaži to the Rauna turning and from Strenči to Valka;
- on regional and local roads in the vicinity of Cēsis, Limbaži and Valka.
Driving conditions are also very difficult on regional and local roads in the vicinity of Talsi, Tukums and Dobele.
106 units of winter equipment are out and about working on the roads, but LVC is reminding the public that the rain may quickly wash away its grit and other anti-slip materials, so that ice may form again. A live map of current conditions on the roads is available here.
Meteorologists predict that the freezing rain may affect most of the country Tuesday night.
According to LVC, graded gravel roads might be particularly treacherous presently. "Those who travel on gravel roads on a daily basis should be prepared for winter driving conditions and ensure that the vehicle is properly equipped, using studded tires if necessary," said LVC.
