Water levels have fallen by about 70 centimeters on Tuesday. Since Saturday morning, when water levels reached the highest mark in the Daugava near Jēkabpils in recent decades, it has fallen by about two meters.
At the Jēkabpils observation station, the water level begins to slide below the seven-meter mark. It still remains above the orange alert criterion of 6.6 meters above the station's zero point.
Evacuation has been stopped on the left bank of the Daugava in Jēkabpils, and the population can return home. Schools will also be open.
As the stream of water crumbled and melted the ice, part of the river in Jēkabpils has been released from ice masses.
The expected increase in water levels in the Daugava upstream from Jēkabpils has not yet begun. At Zeļķi and Pļaviņas, water levels fluctuate and are below the peak reached at the beginning of the year.
Rivers have flooded in many places in Latvia. In most rivers, water levels have started to fall, while water levels in the eastern part of the country are still expected to increase in the coming days.
