Latvian animation longlisted among Oscar candidates

The US Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released a list of films Friday considered for “Oscar” award nominations in the animated film category. Among the 33 films is Latvian director Signe Baumane's animated film “My love affair with Marriage”.

Signe Baumane's film “My love affair with Marriage” has gained acclaim at international festivals, was nominated last year for the European Academy of Motion Picture Awards, and was named best animated film at the National Film Awards “Lielais Kristaps” ceremony in February, while Baumane received awards as best animated film director and best animated film artist.

The adult animated film “My love affair with Marriage” asks the eternal question -- what is love, and how to find and preserve it? The film tells the story of a young woman's search for love, in which mythical sirens engage -- they teach her to aspire to a perfect marriage, yet conceptions crumble irrevocably when biology impacts her behavior and emotions, shaking the foundations of marriage.

The film is a joint production of Latvia, the United States, and Luxembourg, with financial support from the National Film Centre. Latvia's participation in the production and distribution of the film is managed by the studio “locomotive”.

Of the 33 qualifying films, five will be nominated for the nomination. Lists of prize nominees will be announced on January 23, 2024.
