'Artdocfest/Riga' festival returns Friday

From March 1 to 8, Riga will host the 4th International Documentary Film Festival “Artdocfest/Riga”.

More than 30 documentaries will be screened during two competition programs – Baltic Focus and Artdocfest Open.

In the Baltic Focus contest program, Baltic region documentary filmmakers bring together individual and shared destiny, in which every person's life and death are locked in - Western dreams opposite Nepal's reality, breaking heavy taboo themes, everyday life of morgue workers, gravediggers in Latvian grave culture, intimate and shaky portrayal of a Swedish artist, Latvian documentarian Juris Podnieks as a witness of his time, Lithuanian youth as a vivid representative of the generation born in the mid-nineties, inclusion in society with attention deficit and hyperactivity syndrome, as well as celebration of old age.

A total of 20 films have been selected for the Artdocfest Open, covering a wide range of nuanced themes, attracting with vivid creative handwriting and artistic solutions by authors. Viewers have been invited to look into the testimonies of the ages, personal reflexes, and the world's current transformations to understand the commonalities, look up the keys to the present, unmask the delusions of the past and illusions, and see the timeless.

A number of special sessions and three thematic programs - “ArtDoc & ProArt,” “Ukraine above Everything” and “Peace in War” - will also welcome viewers.

On March 1, the “Artdocfest/Riga” shows will be opened by the premiere of a film about the outstanding and prematurely deceased Latvian documentary film director Juris Podnieks.

“Artdocfest/Riga” film sessions will take place in the cinema “Splendid Palace”, as well as in the art center “Zuzeum”.
