Rock Opera 'Lāčplēsis'
The only Latvian epos, 'Lāčplēsis/The Bear Slayer' is marking its 135th anniversary this year. 'Lāčplēsis' has had several adaptations into films, theatrical and musical performances, but Zigmārs Liepiņš' and Māra Zālīte's rock opera is likely the best-known one, carrying with it songs that form a part of the independent Latvian identity.
On Friday, July 28, at 22:00, the rock opera, written 35 years ago, will be performed at the Lielvārde park, where the story originally takes place. Entrance starts at 21:00 and is free for children under 7 years of age. Details on the performing artists and tickets can be found on the event page.
Saldus Saule Festival
On July 28 and 29, one of the oldest music festivals in Latvia, Saldus Saule, takes place in the city of Saldus, Kalnsētas Park. Over 20 local rock and pop music artists will perform, including this year's Eurovision participants Sudden Lights, The Sound Poets, Pērkons, Inokentijs Mārpls, Līvi, and others. Both nights will be followed by silent discos.

Sigulda Opera Music Festival
From July 28 to 30, the picturesque city of Sigulda will be host to its XXIX International Opera Music Festival. Among several events the main one this year is the original Charles Gounod's Faust at the castle ruins open-air stage on Saturday evening. The program also includes a sacred music concert and two other grand performances with international and local opera musicians.
