"Away" walks away from Annecy with international award

Take note – story published 4 years ago

Away, an animated feature made entirely by a single Latvian animator, has scooped a major international prize and also been snapped up by entertainment giant Netflix.

As previously reported by LSM the feature film Away (directed by Gints Zilbalodis) was entered in the Contrechamp competition program as part of the Latvian presence at the Annecy Festival in France.

On June 15 it was revealed that Away had in fact triumphed in the Contrechamp category, which is dedicated to emerging new international talent.

Away is a story about a young boy stranded on his own, trying to survive in a mysterious land while pursued by a dark spirit, and was made entirely by Zilbalodis over more than three years. The young director had already attracted the attention of movie industry bible Variety thanks to his impressive feat, and the quality of his finished work is such that Netflix was reported to have acquired the rights at Annecy, too.
