'Freedom Square' name confirmed

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia will gain a new square in the near future after Riga City Council on March 23 approved designating the open area around the iconic Freedom Monument "Freedom square" (Brīvības laukums)

As previously reported by LSM the territory around the Freedom Monument from Raina Boulevard to the crossroads of Zigfrida Anna Meierovica Boulevard and Aspazija Boulevard is wide, closed to traffic, and regularly used as a venue for celebrations and events, but has historically simply been referred to as a part of Brīvības boulevard.

A plaque with explanatory text will also be installed on the new square saying: "The square was named after the centennial of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia".

The change will be made ahead of the centenary of the proclamation of the republic on November 18, so in future as well as saying "Meet you at the Laima clock," for a traditional rendezvous, we will all be able to add "...on Freedom square."
