Independence day marked in Latvia

On Friday, November 18, Latvia celebrates the 104th anniversary of the country's proclamation, with various events taking place throughout the country. Some of these are streamed live on Latvian Television (LTV) and on LSM.

In Rīga, the celebration started at 9:00 with an ecumenical service at the Doma Church, in which the leaders of the largest Christian denominations participated. 

At 10:30 am, a solemn flower-laying ceremony at the Freedom Monument began. Flowers were also laid down by senior officials of the state.

At 12:00 a formal meeting of the Saeima was held in which senior officials of the country, former members of the Supreme Council, as well as representatives of the foreign diplomatic corps participated.

On the 11. novembra krastmala embankment, the traditional military parade of National Armed Forces, Interior Ministry units and foreign units takes place at 13:30. Watch the live stream on our other story.

At 19:30, a solemn event dedicated to the 104th anniversary of the proclamation of the Republic of Latvia at Brīvības Square will begin. There will be a concert, the address of the President of Latvia, Egils Levits, the anthem of the Republic of Latvia, as well as performances.

Other events will also take place on the country's anniversary, including in Rīga neighborhoods.

Significant traffic restrictions are planned. Traffic is closed on 11. novembra krastmala.  Public transport and the parking areas of “Rīgas Satiksme” will be free of charge.

This year, the Rīga municipality has refrained from fireworks on November 18. Other cities are also known to refrain from fireworks.
