Latvia's hotel visitor figures up by a fifth in March

Data published on May 16 by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in March 2024 the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 164.2 thousand, which is 18.8 % more than in March 2023.

The visitors spent 279.8 thousand nights at the establishments, which is 15.4 % more than in March a year ago.

In March 2024 non-resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 56 % or 91.9 thousand people, which is 25.4 % more than in March a year ago, but 19.4 % less than before the pandemic in May 2019 and Russia's war in Ukraine, which has a significant impact on the arrival of non-residents to Latvia. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to March last year, has grown by 19.8 % and comprised 162.1 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.76 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments1 (1.85 nights in March last year).

The majority of non-residents came from Lithuania (16.8 thousand), Estonia (11.7 thousand), Germany (7.4 thousand), the United Kingdom (7.1 thousand), Finland (6.4 thousand), Poland (3.7 thousand), Spain (3.4 thousand), Ukraine (3.2 thousand) and the USA (3.2 thousand).

Most non-residents were hosted in Riga – 80.1 %, Jūrmala – 6.5 %, Mārupe municipality – 3.9 %, Liepāja – 2.5 %, Daugavpils – 1.1 % and Sigulda municipality – 0.9 %.

In Q1 2024 the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at Latvian tourist accommodation establishments comprised 422.6 thousand, which is 9.2 % more than in Q1 2023. As compared to Q1 of the previous year, the number of nights spent by visitors has risen by 5 % and comprised 724.5 thousand nights. Visitors spent an average of 1.7 nights at tourist accommodation establishments.

In Q1 the number of non-residents comprised 228.5 thousand, which is 10.8 % more than in Q1 of the previous year. The number of nights spent by them has risen by 6.5 % and comprised 408.3 thousand. The number of Latvian residents, in turn, comprised 194.1 thousand, which is 7.4 % more than in Q1 2023. The number of nights spent by them comprised 316.2 thousand, which is a rise of 3.1 %, compared to the respective quarter last year.
