Public order and road safety were closely monitored by the State Police over the Easter holiday. Overall, it has passed peacefully compared to the previous year's Easter, Jančevskis noted.
57 drivers under the influence have been detained. In 37 cases the driver was heavily intoxicated and subject to criminal liability.
For comparison, last year police caught 78 drivers under the influence and 79 two years ago.
293 road accidents were registered at Easter this year, which is also less than last year. 34 people have been injured.
Meanwhile, medics had more work on the Easter holiday this year, for example, 223 patients were brought in at the children's hospital on Monday, Marks Ronis, director of the hospital's emergency center, told Latvian Radio. For the most part, these were patients with varying degrees of injury – bruising, wounds, also scalding with hot liquids. There have also been many complaints relating to fever and cough.
Firefighters have also been active during the holidays. Over the past five nights, from March 28 to the morning of April 2, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGS) received 98 calls to grass fires, the VUGD reported.
