New trains cause big delays on Tuesday again

Train passengers faced significant inconveniences once again Tuesday morning. On the line Rīga-Skulte, the new "Škoda" train had experienced technical problems affecting the movement of other trains. Several trips were canceled, the train operator Pasažieru Vilciens (Vivi) told Latvian Radio on May 7.

Vivi said that this morning, after six o'clock, at the stop of Zvejniekciems, a security system got triggered on one of the new Škoda trains, blocking it from movement. At that stage, there is only a single track, so other trains cannot bypass it.

Four trains between Saulkrasti and Skulte and one between Zvejniekciems and Rīga were canceled; overall, trains were delayed for up to half an hour and more.

The company said the broken train had been taken to the depot, where "Škoda" specialists are looking at the problem.

"The reasons can be different. It may well be a problem with the settings in that system. As a result, there may not be a problem at all. Just change some things in the system [..]. Consequently, I would not say that there may be any train faults, rather it is about electronics and some data that has been entered into this system. Occasionally, however, the driver manages to circumvent this system and can continue to operate the train. Today, for some reason, the maneuver failed," said Edgars Butāns, a spokesman for Vivi.

Whether problems like this can happen again, he did not say.

"As we have said before, it's not work with mechanics but with electronics, software. You need to understand how this software behaves in one situation or another. Of course we're still learning," Butāns said. "As I said, the train is one big computer. If this computer doesn't like something, then the computer is smart enough to signal it."

Of the 32 trains that "Škoda" must transfer to Vivi until July, the Latvian company now has 22, almost all of which carry passengers.
