Wind and snow expected Monday in Latvia; roads snowy

Southern winds will intensify across Latvia on Monday, with gusts expected up to 15-20 meters per second, places along the coast up to 22-24 meters per second, according to forecasts.

The sky will be overcast, precipitation is expected - snowfall, rain and freezing rain, and dangerous ice will form in many places.

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre has issued a yellow-degree warning regarding strong winds on the western coast of Kurzeme and the coast of North Vidzeme, while a warning regarding ice will be in force throughout the day in the central and eastern part of the country.

The maximum air temperature will be between -1 C to -2 C in the east of the country and +3 C to +5 C in western Kurzeme.

Meanwhile Latvian State Roads (LVC) said on January 22 that driving is difficult across the country, especially in the central part of the country as well as Vidzeme and Kurzeme.

110 machinery units are maintaining the roads.

Driving is difficult on the country's main roads A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8, A9, A10, A11, P80. On regional roads, conditions are poor in the vicinity of Rīga, Liepāja, Ventspils, Kuldīga, Saldus, Talsi, Tukums, Dobele, Jelgava, Bauska, Aizkraukle, Ogre, Limbaži, Cēsis, Valmiera, Valka, and Gulbene.
