Police catch offenders in drone raid

The State Police (VP) caught 20 road traffic offenders with the help of a drone in Riga on Thursday, January 25, police said.

In the morning half of Thursday, State Police officers monitored traffic safety and compliance with general road traffic regulations in Rīga, at the intersection of Slokas Street and Jūrmalas Drive, where State Police officers recorded 13 aggressive drivers who, ignoring the interests of other road users, bypassed the congestion to turn right at the intersection. The drivers were prosecuted administratively for aggressive driving.

State police said that the drivers were fined between €70 and €280 and six penalty points for aggressive driving.

In the afternoon police inspected traffic safety in Rīga, at the intersection of the streets of Augusta Deglava and Andreja Saharova Street, as well as at the intersection of the streets of Augusta Deglava and Ulbrokas, where they recorded how seven car drivers performed a left turn maneuver at the moment when the green light signal was not on in the auxiliary section of the traffic light. Those road traffic offenders were also suspended and held administratively liable.

Police said: to prevent motorists from endangering themselves and surrounding road users with dangerous manoeuvres, the State Police periodically use drones to control road traffic, emphasizing fixing aggressive driving offenses and complying with road signs.
