Bike lane removed from Čaka Street in Rīga

Take note – story published 2 years ago

As of Wednesday, September 1, the traffic organization on Marijas/Čaka Street will be changed, keeping only one bicycle lane in the direction of the center, according to Rīga City Transport Department.

The repainting of lanes is currently ongoing, so the Transport Department called on all road users to be cautious and tolerant.

There will now be a public transport lane and an ordinary road transport lane in the direction away from the center, whereas in the direction toward the center there will be an ordinary lane for vehicles and a bicycle lane.

Following a year-long experiment in setting up the bicycle lanes on Čaka Street, the Transport and Traffic Affairs Committee of the Riga City Council decided that as of September 1 there would be only one bicycle lane heading towards the center.

The bicycle lanes have left Rīga residents divided, with most cyclists in favor of the infrastructure and most drivers against. Organization City for People put up a protest August 31 so the lanes would be kept but with no apparent result.
