Latvijas Valsts Ceļi (Latvian State Roads) has started the implementation of bicycle trail development plan, Transport Ministry said February 1.

According to the Road Development Plan and the survey of Latvian State Roads, the main national bike trails are planned in several directions in Latvia, for example, from Rīga to Jelgava, Tukums, Saulkrasti, Valmiera, as well as from Rēzekne to Ludza and from Jēkabpils to Līvāni.

At the same time, work is also ongoing on projects to ensure safe regional mobility. For example, it is currently planned to announce the procurement of construction of a combined pedestrian and cycling road in Svēte near Jelgava and in Sigulda, as well as from Cēsis to Līvi, from Jēkabpils to Sala, from Valmiera to Brenguļi.

"Cycling is used as a mode of transport by many people to go to work and school and elsewhere. Therefore, we also launched a cycling trail development program. In this way, we will move step by step towards an ever-expanding development of the bike trails,"  said the Parliamentary Secretary of the Transport Ministry Jānis Butāns (New Conservative Party).
