Latvia's government formation could be clear next week

The government formation talks will continue with the aim of approving the next Cabinet of Ministers in the Saeima on Friday, September 15, Prime Minister candidate Evika Siliņa (New Unity) said after a meeting with the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs.

Clarity on future sectoral ministers should come next week, when it is planned to vote in the Saeima on the next government. Until now, the Prime Minister's nominee, Siliņa, calls the information about the division of responsibility, although a “draft”, no longer a secret.

In line with this, the New Unity (JV) would assume the positions of Prime Minister, Minister for Finance, Foreign Affairs, Economics, Justice, Education and Science, Climate and Energy, as well as Interior Affairs. The majority of these positions fell under the responsibility of the JV in the previous government and ministers would not change.

The Union of Greens and Farmers (ZZS) could appoint the next Saeima Speaker as the second largest faction. ZZS has an interest in the positions of the Ministry of Agriculture, as well as in the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, the Ministry of Welfare, and also the Ministry of Culture.

Progressives meanwhile, could be responsible for the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Health, and the Ministry of Transport. The latter is also mentioned possibly under the auspices of ZZS.

This division would be in line with the agreement many times mentioned by Silins that the UGF does not apply to the positions of the Ministers of Justice, Home Affairs, Defence and Foreign Affairs in the future coalition.

In the afternoon of Wednesday, September 6, the JV, ZZS and Progressives continue talks on government declarations and work to be done.
